Salt Lake City Public Safety Building

The mayor of Salt Lake City authorized the delivery of a new $125M public safety building and a dedicated emergency operations center. This facility is the first zero net energy (ZNE) public safety building in the country.

Located in a vibrant downtown city block, the 172,000 square foot facility provides an integrated gathering place for residents and visitors. The facility is designed to run “on the grid” during day-to-day activities and completely “off the grid” in the event of an emergency, using renewable energy produced on and off the site.

The project completed below the $125M budget and one month ahead of schedule. The building is rated as an operationally safe building to continue in use during and after a seismic event, and it did achieve zero net energy in the first year and thereafter of operations.
